The developer of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Team Ninja, has revealed that its new title will have a mission system similar to the one that the Nioh franchise, also produced by the studio, features. Furthermore, the game will take about 40 hours to complete.
According to the Spanish website Vandal, which interviewed the game's producer Masaaki Yamagiwa, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty "will have a classic quest structure, just like Nioh. Unlike the games developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware, Nioh does not offer one large map that connects as you progress but separate stages.
Still, Team Ninja has assured that more different routes and secrets will be present in the stages of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty thanks to the addition of jumping, allowing vertical exploration that was not possible in Nioh.
The decision to keep the game somewhat linear came about so that the developers could focus on the combat and action that are most characteristic of Team Ninja games. In addition to Nioh, the developer is also responsible for the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden franchises.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, like the Nioh series, will be challenging, and this will be a factor in determining how long it will take the player to finish the game. The 40 hours mentioned are the time Yamagiwa estimates.
The game will be a hybrid of what the developer and Team Ninja's owner, Koei Tecmo, have to offer. As previously stated, Team Ninja specializes in action games, whereas Koei Tecmo specializes in games depicting the Chinese historical period known as the Three Kingdoms.
"While the Three Kingdoms period is iconic for Koei Tecmo, Team Ninja themselves have never touched on it before. Putting Team Ninja's action together with Koei Tecmo's more popular setting, you could say that Wo Long shares the DNA of both sides. But Koei Tecmo has never actually made a 'dark fantasy' version of Three Kingdoms," the producer said in an interview after unveiling the game in June.
Yasuda says he has always been intrigued by the Chinese historical period and is a fan of works depicting the Three Kingdoms period. With Koei Tecmo's expertise in this context, Team Ninja found it interesting to take on the challenge of creating a game set in this era.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty arrives in early 2023 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and also on Game Pass at launch.
