Will there be no characters from other franchises in MultiVersus?

The statements of the Warner Bros. Games director have given the community something to talk about

Recently there has been much talk about MultiVersus; it is now one of the most popular games in the industry, something that it also achieved thanks to its free-to-play mode, cross-play, and iconic characters from Warner Bros. and DC Comics. What a combo, right?

We know that when it comes to a fighting video game, it is normal for the fan community to start making requests about their favorite characters that they would like to see in the game.

Fortunately, Tony Huynh, MultiVersus director, has excellent communication with his fans through Twitter. He has declared before that the MultiVersus team is open-minded to many future collaborations with other franchises, including anime. Also, he said he finds fans' requests useful.

But, in a recent interview with the portal Axios (via Dot Esports), David Haddad, Warner Bros. Games director, hinted that they don't plan for the competitive game of Player First Games to be a mega crossover like Fortnite or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when it comes to including third-party franchises.

THEN WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE COLLABORATIONS OF OTHER FRANCHISES?

Let's remember that MultiVersus is still in its beta phase, so they are still in a very early stage to start including all kinds of characters based on requests, and for now, the director was very specific stating that "the attention and focus” of the title team is on including characters that belong to Warner Bros. Discovery intellectual properties.

What does this mean? It would mean that we would very likely not see characters from other franchises in the game in the near future.

Perhaps this sounds confusing to many players since the statements made by the director of MultiVersus are inconsistent with those made by the director of Warner Bros. Games.

With all this, it seems that the recent merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery changed the project's focus. For example, all tracks referencing The Lord of the Rings disappeared from the game files, as the rights to the fantasy IP were acquired by Embracer Group.

Note that this does not mean there will not be characters from other franchises in MultiVersus. Remember that David Haddad did not rule out the idea, only indicated that the current focus is on the company's properties.

So, just like the following tweet says:

MultiVersus is available for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
