It is curious how we often find out about video game curiosities long after its launch.

Speaking specifically of the character of Kirby, over more than 30 years, he is a character that has achieved the affection of many fans and a privileged place in the industry. If you think of one of Kirby's unique abilities, you will indeed imagine his ability to swallow and copy enemies by inhaling them.

It is very curious how this characteristic so peculiar to Kirby, that has managed to become part of his charm, could never have happened. Why do we say it? It happens that Masahiro Sakurai took everyone by surprise by announcing to his followers that he would make a YouTube channel to share tips that could help developers create more fun games.

On the occasion of celebrating and opening his first section, Sakurai talked about Kirby's Dream Land, the first game for which he is credited as director and which he proposed when he was just 19 years old.

In the video, the developer mentioned several details they took into account to create Kirby's first adventure, but what surprised everyone was that Kirby originally planned to use his tongue to grab enemies from a distance... Sound familiar? Sure, it's the same ability as the character Yoshi.

However, it is important to mention that Sakurai came up with this before Yoshi existed. For a reason he sadly didn't share, Sakurai decided that in the end, Kirby would better use an ability where he sucks his friends into his mouth just by inhaling them, then spits them back out or swallows them whole.

SAKURAI WANTED KIRBY'S FIRST GAME TO BE SIMPLE

Another interesting detail is that Sakurai mentioned the difficulty of the game; he wanted Kirby to have the ability to float because he considered it too cruel that only one life was lost for missing a jump.

All this was to make the game as accessible as possible for new players.

Sakurai reflects that making the title a welcome point for new players who weren't familiar with this pastime at the time was a wise move and backed up his argument by recalling that it is the best-selling title in the franchise.
