Naughty Dog showed off some interesting new features

Sony detailed all of the game's accessibility features on the PlayStation blog shortly before the release of The Last of Us Part 1. The game not only includes the more than 60 accessibility options from The Last of Us Part 2, but it also includes some entirely new features. One of them aids deaf players in following the game.

The goal of the expanded functions is to make the game more accessible to everyone who hasn't been able to play the first or second part yet, or only to a limited extent due to various obstacles.

Subtitle size, volume control, and difficulty levels are just a few of these new features. One of the most comprehensive new features may be audio descriptions for movie sequences.

Dialogs as controller vibrations: Sony reveals another new feature in the blog entry that is not yet available in any other game. The dialogs can optionally be output as haptic feedback via the DualSense controller.

This option allows you to feel the intonation of the words and when combined with the dialog or subtitles, gives you a better sense of the mood of the spoken words, such as whether the character sounds upset or hesitant.

These are some accessibility options that The Last of Us Part 1 offers

Audio:

  • Audio cues: You can add audio cues to visual cues for exploring, traversing, and fighting.
  • Screen Reader: This allows you to have a voice-read menu and text on the screen.
  • Movie Sequence Descriptions: This enables descriptive audio commentary during movie sequences.
  • Speech to Vibration: Dialogs are additionally output as vibrations via the controller.

Visuals:

  • Magnification: you can zoom in on elements like the HUD or subtitles, or use the touchpad to use an on-screen magnifier.
  • Visual aids: You can do things like darkening the background of menus, changing the color palette and text color of the HUD, turning flashing menu animations on and off, or choosing a high-contrast display for the game.
  • Game Nausea: To prevent game nausea, you can adjust the camera shake, motion blur, camera tracking distance, and field of view, or set a permanent white dot in the center of the screen. You can also turn off the discoloration of the image when your health is low.
  • Perception indicators: You can display in the HUD from which direction you are taking damage if an enemy has spotted you, or how often you want to receive gameplay hints from the game.

General:

  • Combat aids: Allows you to adjust the difficulty of fights, be invisible to enemies when prone (without aiming), enable slow motion when aiming, disable tinnitus sounds, or prevent enemies from flanking you, for example.
  • Vibration: You can set the vibration for individual game elements from 1 to 100 or turn it off.
  • Audio Volume: You can adjust the volume for various game elements individually.
  • Subtitles: You can adjust the size, background, and color of the subtitles, turn the names of the people speaking on or off, and indicate which direction a person is speaking from.
  • Difficulty levels: There are a total of five difficulty levels, where you can adjust various factors as well. All trophies are independent of the difficulty level you choose.

The Last of Us Part 1 will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022, and in addition to the standard edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition will also arrive on the next generation console.
