It is a well-known fact that Pokémon is a franchise that aims to reach a broad audience. Usually, this leads to having titles that don’t go too deep into any problematic or emotional (sad) topics. Nevertheless, a couple of Poké-stories have torn us apart in the past.
On Pokémon Red & Blue & Green, we experienced one of the saddest (if not the most) stories the franchise has ever had. The origin of Cubone.
And as if it weren’t enough, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet decided that a subtle reference of this story would be included in the upcoming titles.
Earlier this week, we were just finding out about the competitive features the upcoming Pokémon games will offer. And we were introduced to the terastallize mode (more or less what the Dynamax form was in the Sword & Shield version.) The video also revealed the tea-type ghost (among others) in all its glory. If you pay close attention, this new form displays a significant element from the original type of the Pokémon in question. Well, this is where it gets… chilly.
The ghost tera-type has demonstrated a little more deepness into its true identity. When it reaches its peak form, we can appreciate a ghastly figure that somehow feels too familiar. Well, let me refresh your memory. This particular spirit debuted on a first-generation Pokémon game, blocking a passage in the Pokémon Tower (at the super spooky Lavander Town.) If it still doesn’t ring a bell, this ghost is the spirit of a Marowak mom who passed away and left a baby Cubone orphan.
Cubone’s story led to many even sadder creepypastas in the past. The internet is full of them; you can check them out. They’re actually pretty good (but tearful, so keep your tissues close).
This peculiar and subtle hint has been a topic of conversation among those who played the original Pokémon stories and knew about this particular spirit. The reference is pretty cool because it takes us back to another kind of game and still welcomes the new features for the new generations to enjoy.
