Gotham Knights reveal more character abilities in new video

The road to become the next dark knight will be very complex

Gotham Knights keep revealing new details just a couple months ahead of its release. This time Patrick Redding, project's creative director talked exclusively with IGN about how skill trees work for each character and how this influences your future as the next protector of Gotham City.

Apparently, each character has four different skill trees, in addition to a handful of costumes and equipment that can modify these skills. Skills can be unlocked through experience points and skill points, as well as by meeting certain “requisites like those seen in RPGs and action games.”

You may be wondering how this influences your experience. Well, the skill tree progression may dictate the road your character is following so your choices are always going to matter to you, at least as far as what it takes for you to beat the story.

In Redding’s own words: “I think players will, and probably should mix and match to get the best out of the abilities in Gotham Knights. We know that players will choose ability clusters as we’ve arranged them in the trees because they are excited about individual ability, but there is a lot of synergy between trees and also, you have to experiment to find out what you like.”

In more detail…

It is important to make clear that you can switch characters during the game’s progression and your accumulated ability points will follow you, so you don’t need to restart or beat the story to explore each character's skill tree.

As we said before, each character has four skill trees, which offer separate directions to specialize your hero, so for example, if you want Batgirl to focus more on 1v1 melee combat, or for Nightwing to provide buffs in co-op, then have at it.

Each of them can develop abilities differently, however, they share a fourth skill tree, Knighthood, which becomes available after a key moment in the story. This branch will unlock the character ultimate ability. Redding noted that once you've unlocked Knighthood for a character, you don't need to go and replay the story with other heroes in order to access that progression, however, you'll need to go out and do the challenges for that hero that are associated with these additional skills.

Besides skill trees, there is another menu of unlockables like Momentum Abilities which grants special attacks, however many of the Momentum skills relate to the skill trees, but are obtained differently.
