Diablo 4 to have seasons, battle pass and cosmetic store

The game will not be pay-to-win

Anyone familiar with video game industry monetization trends or Activision Blizzard's recent actions will not be surprised by this news.

The developers confirmed in a new quarterly report on the status of Diablo 4 that it will be a 'game-as-a-service' with elements such as microtransactions, seasons, battle pass, cosmetic store, and constant content updates.

Diablo 4 Seasons will be inspired by Diablo III. When a new season begins, players must create a new character to level up and earn the appropriate rewards for their 'Journey.'

When the season ends, all characters created for it will transfer to the Eternal Realm, and players can still use them, but they will be useless for future seasons. Each season will launch with new gameplay features, different events, and a quest line. These will reveal more of the world of Sanctuary.

Blizzard also stated that as the seasons progress, new unique and legendary items, Paragon Boards, glyphs, and many other elements to Diablo 4 will be added that will affect the game's meta. All Diablo 4 players will be able to access the seasons for free.

The season pass, like in other games, will be filled with rewards that will become available as players progress through the season. There will be a single reward track with Free Levels unlocked simply by playing the game and 'Premium' or paid Levels that offer no playable advantage.

The pass's Free Levels will provide gameplay boosts such as items to help level up. Premium Level rewards will only be cosmetic.

“The Shop sells cosmetics for Premium Currency. Cosmetics give players even more options to customize the visual appearance of their characters. Nothing offered in the Shop grants a direct or indirect gameplay advantage. So, while many of these may look like powerful pieces of gear, they have no in-game stats.” they said about the in-game shop.

Although these gameplay models are now commonplace, Diablo veterans are not yet fully embracing the micro-transaction model yet, so we will have to wait to see for ourselves if it is a favorable thing. The game is set to release for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 2023.
