Half-Life 2 VR gets public beta next month!

It was about time!

It took almost a decade for Source VR Mod Team to develop a prolix virtual reality mod for the original Half-Life 2, however after a long wait and a successful private beta… the time has come. Through a vlog entry accompanied by a new trailer, the team have announced a public beta that’ll be available next month.

They are working and working…

As expected the team pointed out how large and ambitious this project was, and even though it will never be truly finished, they think that this VR experience is one of the best they can possibly offer.

First announced on 2013 and part of Steam’s Greenlight program back in 2017, this VR adaption was a particularly difficult task as the original game had numerous sections that have been almost impossible to port to a headset.

But wait! You don’t have to worry, as the game is fully playable from start to finish in its current state and all gameplay elements are available. However, there are some tweaks here and there that they are working hard to fix.

What do I need for this Beta?

First and most important, you need to own a copy of the original Half-Life 2 on Steam and that’s it! As the mod itself will be free of charge. However! There is a little detail that should be considered… They still don’t know if the initial release will happen on Steam as they are still waiting for approval from Valve, we have until September to know.

In the sad case that this didn’t happen, rest easy, the team is planning an alternate launch in order to reach the September deadline.

On the other hand, there is not an exact release date yet, so stay tuned to LevelUp for future updates, in the mean time enjoy the announcement trailer below:
