In the second half of 2022, Nintendo will not announce a new Nintendo Switch model or its successor console. Shuntaro Furukawa, the Japanese company's president, clarified this in response to a Nikkei article (via VGC) that analyzes a recent Nintendo sales report that specifies that hardware and software sales have declined year on year for the three months ending June 2022.
According to Nikkei, Nintendo is solely focused on producing enough Switch units with the components it has been able to acquire to compensate for this minor drop in console sales.
“Normally, we stockpile inventory in the summer to prepare for the year-end sales season, which is at its peak. This summer, we are not able to produce as many as usual.” Furukawa said.
The president emphasizes that the company is working on the Switch and that they are confident in its ability to sell 21 million consoles by March 2023.
Despite Nintendo stating earlier this month that it was in talks to obtain the necessary manufacturing parts, Furukawa admits that the situation regarding the procurement of such materials is currently unclear.
Although the focus is on the Nintendo Switch, especially the manufacturing element of the hardware, Nintendo has its next system in mind.
The console itself remains a complete mystery, and, likely, we will not know concrete details about it until the company decides to officially announce it, even though Nintendo has been working on its concept to create a device that offers new ways to play games for some time. According to an analyst, the new console could be released in 2024, though we cannot confirm this at this time.
