Since its announcement in 2020, NFL fans have been waiting for good news on the return of this franchise by 2K Sports. While EA Sports still hold exclusive simulation rights, 2K's entry will probably include elements that fans enjoy. Unfortunately, developers have been silent about it.
The game was supposed to see the light in 2021, but it got delayed to 2022. With no news and the 2022 NFL season approaching, there is concern that the wait will be longer.
According to SGO's sources, 2K Sports is working towards a likely 2023 release. However, a 2024 launch is still very possible.
“There is a lot going into this game, and they want it to be done the right way, if that means a longer development time, then that’s what they are willing to do.”
While some players assumed that this new NFL game would be a part of the Lego collaboration, that is unlikely to be the case.
“Despite being arcade, this is still a true football game,” a source said. Given the development status of this entry, we can probably expect significant changes that will affect the final result, especially since not having rights to the simulations might be challenging for the developing team.
NFL 2K5 was the last entry of this franchise, and it came out on July 20, 2004, for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Players received the title fondly and have been expecting a new entry for a long time.
