Nintendo Switch's retro controllers are now compatible with Steam

Including NES, SNES, N64, and Mega Drive

Over the last few years, Nintendo has announced different controllers for classic systems to play on Nintendo Switch Online in the most authentic way possible to games from other times.

So far, they have released controllers for NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Mega Drive, but now you can also use them on Steam.

A representative from Valve has confirmed to The Verge what the last notes of the Steam update on July 27 dropped: controller support for classic Nintendo is now live, particularly for the four mentioned before.

This patch also includes support for different joysticks intended to play in fighting titles and improvements in PS5 DualSense support. However, the great novelty is being able to use those classic Nintendo Switch controllers in games that require a more limited amount of buttons, given the characteristics of this type of controller.

In general, the supported controllers are wireless and have fewer buttons than the standard console ones, which makes them perfect for small indie games. It seems like Valve intends to expand compatibility with console input devices as much as possible.

On the other hand, the Mega Drive controller could be very useful for playing the old Sega classics on PC, but also for many 2D fighting games that are not necessarily from the Nintendo franchise, given its particular characteristics.

Besides these controllers, Steam also supports many others, such as:

  • Xbox 360 controllers (Wired/USB dongle)
  • Xbox One controllers (Wired/Bluetooth)
  • Xbox One Elite controllers (Wired/USB dongle)
  • Xbox Series X controllers (Wired/Bluetooth)
  • PS4 controllers (Wired/Bluetooth)
  • Switch Pro controllers (Wired/Bluetooth)
  • Logitech and HORI controllers (Wired/Bluetooth)
  • PlayStation DualShock controllers (Wired/Bluetooth)
