Rumor: An Asian setting could arrive to the Assassin’s Creed franchise

It looks like a new title could take place in Japan

As many of you may know by now, this year, Assassin’s Creed is celebrating its 15th anniversary with tons of surprises and announcements. Among the most anticipated news is (besides Assassin's Creed Rift) anything related to Assassin’s Creed Infinity (revealed a year ago) and an unknown title.

In case you may not remember, Assassin’s Creed Infinity is a collaboration between Ubisoft Quebec (Odyssey) and Ubisoft Montreal (Origins and Valhalla), which entails a massive online game set across multiple historical periods that evolves as a live service. “It’s not going to be free to play, and this game will have a lot of narrative elements in it,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said (thanks, Video Game Chronicles!).

Even though there hasn’t been an official announcement related to Assassin’s Creed Infinity, Kotaku has found information that not only related Infinity to the unknown title, but they are part of each other. And what’s more, a story in Japan could come in one of them. Here is the scoop (via Kotaku):

Assassin’s Creed has remained one of the few big bright spots for the company. Kotaku understands that in addition to the live-service project Assassin’s Creed Infinity, Ubisoft is also still planning another new open-world Assassin’s Creed game called Project Red.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reports Red is part of Infinity rather than a separate game. According to two sources familiar with its development, it will be set in Asia. VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb reported that the game might be set in Japan. While Kotaku can’t yet confirm that, sources said that setting, in addition to being long requested by fans, has long been discussed internally.”

A question stands… what about the remaining “unknown title”?

Yesterday, Ubisoft was just announcing that the Avatar game would be delayed. However, alongside this announcement, the company also revealed that “a smaller unannounced premium game” would arrive in April 2023. Could this be Assassin’s Creed Rift instead? Possibly, but it’s complicated to feel sure about this right now. However, we know that Ubisoft’s next Forward showcase will air on September 10, so hopefully, many of our doubts will come to light then.
