Skate is a long-time EA franchise that began with its first title in 2007. It was EA’s attempt to enter the skateboarding world following Activision’s massively successful Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, which was a massive and transcendental hit. In a way, EA did end up finding success, following the sk8r game up with two sequels. And about a year and a half ago, fans were finding out about a brand-new Skate title coming to consoles.
Several announcements and revelations have been made in the last months regarding this title. The most recent one was that the new Skate project would be an ongoing free-to-play game. In response to some of the players' concerns, Full Circle made a point during the reveal to specifically quell these concerns, affirming that there would be “no pay to win, no areas locked behind paywalls, no paid loot boxes, and no paid gameplay advantages.” Still, some fans were kept with unresolved doubts, such as “why are there loot boxes that ask for a purchase?”
Now that some people have already dove into the game (and casually are into data mining), doubts have been clarified. The recent Skate playtests came with something entitled “product boxes” with a random unlockable item inside when you open them. These mysterious boxes are labeled Swag Bags and can be purchased by exchanging Taps. In case you were wondering: yes. These basically loot boxes with extra steps. According to Dual Shockers, the Swag Bags are customization items for your character and Build Kit items that will let you customize your skating area.
So, could these boxes be easily acquired by saving game currency? Allegedly. Though this could also mean that an in-game purchase could eventually surface and make sense in these Swag Bags. But who knows, we’ll have to find out when the game comes out, right?
