Electronic Arts decided to eliminate the BioWare Points system, an internal currency of this developer's games used to buy extra content. Previously, the only way to access Mass Effect and Dragon Age DLC on PC was to purchase these BioWare Points and then exchange them for the content.
This system was controversial at the time, in part because BioWare Points could only be purchased in packs of 800, so any additional content that we wanted to purchase required us to purchase at least two - or sometimes even four or five - different packs.
In an email sent to Origin users, Electronic Arts announced that it will remove Bioware Points on October 11. Other internal currencies of the games themselves, however, will remain in force.
So what will become free exactly?
DLC from the original Mass Effect and Dragon Age installments on Origin that previously could only be purchased through BioWare Points can now be downloaded for free. This includes Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. To redeem the free content, simply find the games in your library, navigate to the downloadable content tab, and press the ''get it for free'' button.
The company has also stated that no player will lose access to the content they have previously purchased with their BioWare Points. The only thing that isn't free right now is the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer packs. Electronic Arts has clarified that it will allow users to purchase them with their remaining Bioware Points for the next three months.
