Tango Gameworks' experiment outside the horror genre apparently didn't pay off

The biggest fear that every video game developer can face is that their game will not be a success and, worse still, that the failure will be immediate.

You may recognize Tango Gameworks, Bethesda's Japanese studio, for its horror genre video games. However, the developer had worked on a completely different title, but unfortunately, it did so badly that it stopped working less than six months after its release.

Tango Gameworks, a studio founded and led by Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil), not only released Ghostwire: Tokyo last March, but also Hero Dice, a multiplayer title for up to 4 players for mobile phones that mixes board game elements with hero battles and microtransactions with which gems and characters could be obtained.

The game debuted on March 31, and unfortunately, it has just been announced that it will stop working on August 31, precisely five months after its exclusive release in Japan on iOS and Android devices (App Store and Google Play Store, respectively). There was never talk of a premiere in the West.

WHY WILL HERO DICE STOP WORKING?

According to the information (via Video Games Chronicle), why the game will stop working is not revealed. However, it was reported that as of June 29, it is no longer possible to buy more gems or characters within the game. Players will also be refunded the value of any unused gems.

This is undoubtedly a shame, as it represents the studio's first flop since its founding in 2010. So far, in addition to Hero Dice, the studio has created three games: The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

A few months ago, Shinji Mikami mentioned in an interview that he hoped to change people's image of Tango Gameworks as a studio specializing solely in the horror genre and show that the team was capable of developing "a wider variety of games." The creative commented before that he does not rule out directing one more game before his retirement.
