Although it’s not likely we’ll have a Returnal 2 right now, the material is right there

Returnal is a third-person shooter horror game featuring roguelike elements, set in a futuristic science fiction setting. A space pilot, equipped with a suit and high-tech weapons, is stranded on the alien planet Atropos and stuck in a time loop. The synopsis alone (and the fact that it already won a BAFTA) makes this title a must for all horror fans. Furthermore, Returnal is such an epic game that Housemarque could create a sequel with the material they didn’t use for the famous title.

Now that there’s a new IP coming up, there were rumors about that Returnal sequel being the soon-to-be-announced title.

Housemarque’s senior narrative designer spoke with VGC and revealed that “the studio plans to incorporate ideas and narrative systems originally planned for Returnal into its next original game.”

Eevie Korhonen also told VGC: “Returnal was so ambitious. We dreamt super big but still had to leave so much on the cutting room floor. All of these ideas and narrative systems. I’m super excited to pick up those pieces and see how those fit our new IP story.”

VGC also asked the writer if the main character in Returnal had completed her hero’s journey on Returnal:“([aughing] I can’t comment on that too much. But I think the boys did slip sometime earlier this year that we are working on an original IP. So, of course, if we return to Selene’s story after that, it remains to be seen.”
