Right to Repair Law for electronics pass in New York

Officially the first state in the USA to pass it

A terrible reality of our times is the impossibility to repair electronics, either smartphones or video game consoles; manufacturers do not provide the tools, parts or instructions to both consumers and independent repair shops.

However, today the New York state legislature passed a new piece of legislation aimed at covering "Right to Repair" when it comes to electronics. This bill is mainly a big deal for repair shops, which will finally be able to compete with manufacturers. Actually, iFixit celebrated the ruling through a blog post on their official website.

How convenient is this for me as a consumer?

The passage of this bill also means that repairs would become less expensive and more comprehensive. Can you imagine bringing back to life that phone that the store said that it was unfixable?

The Fair Repair Act is still awaiting the signature of Governor Kathy Hochul, who is expected to support the measure; and will take effect one year after it passes into law.

If you wanted another reason to support this bill we’d also help to reduce the 655,000 tons of toxic e-waste produced and typically discarded in a single calendar year in New York State.

Hopefully, more and more states will follow as in a recent California survey, 59% of independent repair shops said they might have to close their doors without the passage of Right to Repair.
