Obi-Wan Kenobi, so far, so good?

Here are my two cents regarding the latest Star Wars series

Here goes Disney+ with more exclusive content for the fans. So far, Obi-Wan Kenobi has been a massive hit. It is breaking records on its premiere weekend, creating anti-racism conversation. It has undoubtedly gone the distance. But, the content itself, is it going where we expected it to go?

I’m not sure this will be a spoiler-free outlook, so tread lightly if you haven’t seen it.

On one side, I must say that the three episodes that have been released have something I describe as “the other side of the coin.” Obi-Wan is not only an essential character in the Star Wars story, but he is also a very endearing personality. After facing Anakin in one of the most memorable and tragic battles of the saga, Obi embarks on a hermit-like journey to protect one of the Skywalker kids. And at this moment, we can appreciate the real sacrifices of a Jedi, going solo, unnoticed, living with the minimum in not-so-ideal conditions. All of this for the sake of little Luke, to preserve the force and keep the Empire from doing something genuinely barbaric (as they usually do.)

By the way, how cute are little Luke and Leia? Especially her; we didn’t see much from the Skywalker sister when she was young in the original trilogy. She’s as feisty and bold as we remember her. Even her outfits match those worn by beloved Carrie Fisher. This side of the day to day of the Skywalkers before Luke began his famous “hero’s journey.”

On the other hand, we see what the Empire really was like at its peak moment. The beginning of Darth Vader’s mandate (with the epic comeback of James Earl Jones’s voice) and his first rulings. Even his agreements with the Inquisitors which is very exciting to look at. Everyone seemed to pay respect to Lord Vader, but at the same time, they also were (obviously) afraid of him. Everyone tried so hard to be as close to him as they could be because this meant protection and power. Oh, the power, corrupting people since the beginning of times.

The storyline that leads to the reunion between master and apprentice feels very organic for the most part. It flows as it should in the original trilogy. The side stories also lead to critical points that fans have been wondering about since the beginning, which is (in my opinion) a well-delivered fan service. And come on, those lightsaber encounters are always tremendous and exciting to watch.

We’re still halfway through Obi-Wan Kenobi, and in my opinion, this has been a fantastic experience. Hopefully, the upcoming episodes will keep the plot exciting and flowing as it has been so far.
